megan ball bounce Empty megan ball bounce

Post  newrealm96 Sat Feb 05, 2011 2:55 am

Would anyone have any idea why my pretty much new megans would have a ball characteristic bounce to them. I literally push down on the front of the car and it has a little bounce to it. Anyone have any idea why, the sites moderator said that they might be blown but i find that hard to believe since they did that from the get go. thanks

They should NOT do that .
pretty much all coilovers have pressure in the damper and if they dont then they have resistance when you puch on the damper alone.

Did you buy em brand new?? and whats the spring rates?

Also, take the coil off, take the spring off the coil and apply pressure to the dampening shaft to make sure it has a decent ammount of resistance. it it doesnt then ... theyre blown

yeah i bought them brand spaken new the spring rates are 8k and 6k if i remember correctly. So you suggestion is to take them all apart and see it the shock portion has resistance to it?

Excesive "bouncing" as you call it should never happen in a properly functioning damper.

Just because they're relitivly new, doesnt mean they're still good. I've seen set come new in box with a blown damper. Lowering your car excessivly can cause premature blowing. Debris can easily damage the seals also.

Does if feel the same at all four corners?

A common misconception as far as dampening adjustment is turning them all the way closed to "Stiffen" them up. You should NEVER run your dampening adjustment all the way CLOSED or OPEN. This will not allow the valving in the damper to properly do its job allowing adjusted amounts gas to pas the piston on compression and rebound strokes dampening the "Bounce" and effect.

Try adjusting your dampening to a middle setting. Also does the car continue to "float" up and down after crossing a dip or train tracks?

Check them for leaks, adjust dampening, then pull them apart if needed like Jake said to check for gas pressure.
Compress the damper shaft and note if it expands back out and amount of resistance it gives you while compressing it.

Thanks

No the front feels different than the back, and after i pass a dip it just has the same effect as if i push it down by hand, it just bounces two or three times and settles down to neutral. It feels as if the front just doesn't have and shock to it, now that i think about it a car with blown shocks does the same thing since its riding on just springs right. so ima put the settings in the middle first and then if that doesn't to anything i am going take them apart and see if the shock is blown and if it is i am not going to be a happy camper lol. And by the way my dampeners are not all the way stiff of soft their at about 8 or 7 right now but ill try putting them in the middle.

They should rebound once and stay after hitting a bump or pressing on the corner of the car. Dampening might help a little but it sounds like your rears are blown.

Keep us updated what you find out.

Thanks

Uh, check tire pressure too... if you have a tall ass tire with low air pressure it may do what your saying. I run my tires at Hella high pressures and I can defininately feel a difference if any of them get low. It seems like the low tire bounces.

Yeah your right, I must have read through it fast. Thought you were saying the opposite.

There's a recommended max PSI on the side of every manufactured tire. You can go a little higher in colder weather but drop a few PSI when it starts to get summer. In our common sizes probably around 35-45PSI.

EDIT: Make sure you check your sidewall first for MAX recommended PSI and go accordingly

onevia drift your a genius. I never checked the tire pressure after i put on my new tires and guess what it was? 30 freaken psi when the max is 51 wow that's throwing my gas mileage out the window lol, but yeah put the psi at 45 all four corners thought that would be sufficient and sure enough the bounce is gone. I also set the stiffness to about 22 instead of 12 so ill take it for a test drive when i wake up cuz its too dam cold right now. thanks guys for the help and support. This forum is badass

Keep an eye more regularly on your tire pressure, it'll vary a lot with temperatures.

Glad to hear you got it solved if that was all it was.

yeah that made it ride a hell of a lot better it felt like i was actually driving on tires lol. It felt a lot smoother and way less bouncier. The ride is a lot better and badicalradical you have your tires at 65 psi? You want them overinflated to get less contact patch or for what reason?
